Under the current rules only the best run of the two is used to calculate Veterans ranking points. All other classes take both runs into account.

Veterans points are calculated against the corresponding divisional class, e.g. a Div 2 Vet earns his points by comparing his time against the Div 2 class, and awarding the points he would get if competing in that class. A Div 3 Vet would earn his points against the Div 3 class.

The problem comes if , say, several Div 2 (or 3) paddlers have the same best score, and are then separated and ranked by their second run.

An example from Cardington in 2009:

First place paddler had best run score of 109 and second run of 114
Second placed paddler had 110 and 115
Third placed paddler had 110 and 138
Fourth placed paddler had 111 and 116

First placed Vet had 110 and 112 which would have placed him 2nd in the Div 2 race, but only the best run is used, so which of the Div 2 paddlers would he be awarded points against?

Surely the second run should be counted as well?

Discuss.

Correct me if i'm wrong (frequently) but all divisions are best run counts, so comparing vets againsts the ranking k1m isn't an issue.

It's the best of two runs for all classes that is counted.aggregates aren't used anymore

I think that Terryg is referring to the situation where a tie on best run results is resolved by looking at the score for the other run. Surely in this case the corresponding veteran points would simply be taken from the higher of the two main event paddlers with the relevant score?

Just got back from a week in Scotland, away from the computer.

Perhaps I did not explain the issue well enough, or maybe it only makes sense to those who understand how Vets points are calculated, but Jerry is the only one who has understood.

Unfortunately there is no rule to state whether the Vet should get the higher, or lower, points.
In the example, I was awarded the lower points by the event organiser and had to argue my case with the ranking list compiler to get the higher points.
This has happened on several occasions.

How do other Vets, and event organisers, feel this should be handled?

The note at the bottom of rule B6.4 (page 61) covers this - basically saying that if the modified score matches the score of more than one K1M you use the modified second run to compare with the K1M second run.

The same note is is the C1W and C2 points where points are based on comparison with the K1M. But its not included in the calculation of points for inquorate C1M and K1W.

Thanks Les, unfortunately rule B6.4 relates to Premier/Div 1 Vets. This note is not included in rule B6.2.1 for Div 2/3 Vets. Perhaps it should be?
