Duty of Care in Sport

Post by Steve Agar » Fri Apr 21, 2017 4:52 pm

Given some of the recent discussions regarding the relationships between athletes, coaches and governing bodies, including within canoeing, people may find the newly published report on Duty of Care in Sport interesting and pertinent. I trust we are brave enough to ask ourselves the awkward questions and take responsibility for ensuring all participants are being treated in a way they deserve and that allows our sport to be fulfilling and, dare I say, fun for all.

Baroness TGT should know what she's talking about across multiple sports, not just canoeing, but end of the day it's a review that can make recommendations only. It's up to the Boards to drive the culture and behaviours and then monitor robustly. My knowledge of Boards and Non Execs typically sees the headlines only revealed by any Executive management with the back story details silent unless probing questions are asked. If those questions are likely to impact funding then I doubt much will happen to change behaviours. :(
