Howsham Weir Fish Pass - Conclusion

Post by Phil Stevo » Thu Jun 22, 2017 7:29 pm

The Environment Agency has concluded its consultation and decision making process on Howsham Weir with the following update:

Following consultation, engagement and further work on design, our decision document has been published here this morning. This sets out what we plan to put in place at Howsham and how we have reached our decision.

To summarise, we will install a single fish pass with enhancements to make it more attractive to migratory salmonids. We will include eel and lamprey tiles on the weir, and reduce the canoe chute flow by about 10% to provide extra flow to the fish pass. This will provide a substantial improvement to fish passage while as far as possible protecting recreational use of the site. The decision document provides further details.

This I think can be considered as the best result we could have hoped for given the circumstances. Although the canoe chute will lose 10% of its flow it is actually more slalom boat friendly in lower water so this should not be too much of an issue

Thank you to everyone who submitted to the consultation and helped to secure the canoe chute for the future.
