There is a move to change the number of members required to call an EGM within the BCU from 50 members to 5% (Approx 1250) of the membership. This could effectively silence the individual disciplines from having a voice to change things within the Union.

Is this an acceptable move by the BCU? There has not been a rash of calls for EGM's nor has there been a change that allows for greater democracy within the Union negating the need for EGM's by the individual disciplines.

BCU AGM forms came out recently with Canoe Focus and with it the Proxy voting form. The form can be used to allow someone else to vote on your behalf (as directed by you) if you are unable to attend the AGM. You are able to strike from the form the words "Chairman of the Meeting or failing them" and insert the name and membership number of a person who you trust to vote accordingly.

James Farquharson (editor of Thames Weir Project, X GB freestyle team member) is putting forward a move to call for the new figure to be set at 1%. This figure I feel would still allow the individual disciplines (slalom/polo/wwr etc.) within the BCU the right of voice without too much disruption to the normal running of the BCU. Info (how to make use of the proxy form) & discussion is here on UK Rivers GuideBook forum.
