We've just been told that the school Easter holiday 2008 will not be over Easter, but a week later...5th - 20th April. Has anyone else had this "brilliant!" news or is it just Derbyshire?

Are you sure you meant 2008? I'm not even used to 2007 yet. I heard a rumour all the school holidays might become a similar length. Why can't politicians leave things alone? ???

No .. it's not just Derbyshire .. East Berkshire and some London Boroughs also have their holidays in April 08 whilst Easter is in March 08.

Strange but true.

Following a huge fuss a couple of years ago the local Councils up here are starting to work together and Holiday dates are already published through to 2010:

Easter Breaks for Schools in Aberdeen City & Shire:
21/03/08 - 04/04/08
04/04/09 - 19/04/09
27/03/10 - 11/04/10

All include the easter weekend in some form.

I understood there was supposed to be some form of Government initiative to standardise school terms to allow regular blocks for teaching plans. But you might need someone employed in Education to clarify how disrupting a regular block to take a globally recognised Christian holiday damages the education process. Suspect the number of unauthorised absences will increase and once again it will all be the fault of the uncaring parents.....

Doncaster & Scunthorpe in their wisdom have published dates for this year as being 30/03 - 16/04 at least they looked at the slalom calendar first

Durham/North East Schools are off from 20th-25th March (Easter) then again between 4th-21st April, it seems that many education authorities are adopting this structure ???

We live in Lancashire and have already been warned by the local high school about the change in holiday pattern for Easter starting in 2008.

The intention is to regulate the length of both the Spring & Summer terms so that they are of a similar length.

This will effectively mean that the Easter bank holidays will not always coincide with the school 'Easter' break, which is the case for a number of local authorities in 2008 but it would appear not all.

This will make planning the slalom calendar for 2008 even more fun than usual!!!

Luckily, most local authorities now publish their school holiday patterns at least a year in advance and these can be searched via the Directgov website.

I live in Essex and we have had fixed Spring breaks for the past 2 years. The Spring break is always the same two weeks, irrespective of when Easter falls. Sometimes Easter is included, while other years we get Good Friday and Easter Monday as a long weekend on their own. Spring break this year is 2nd to 13th April. Sometimes works to your advantage if you want to beat the holiday companies who charge more just because it's school holidays, but I think lots of councils are changing now, so that benefit probably won't last much longer.

This all sounds fun, and of course it's not just where you live it also depends on the type of school. The school Forbes used to go to had the summer half-term a week later than everyone else and even had to attend on the bank holiday most years.

For 2008 he has 21/3 to 9/4 inclusive
