Level 1 (and Level 2) Slalom Coach Course (old-style): August 2007

The postponement of UKCC accreditation for the new Coaching Courses means
a) that there is not at present a way of those who
want to coach Slalom getting a quick qualification.
b) That delivery of the old courses, which was meant
to finish in April, has now been extended at least
until the end of August.
Giving way, therefore, to demand from my own Club, and other Clubs in Yorkshire, I propose to run another Last-Ever Level 1 course - with the possibility to proceed to Level 2 Assessment - that does not have to be done by the end of August, merely started) at Grandtully during the week of August 20th - 24th, with shadowing/assessment possibilities both at the Fairnilee Div 2/3 August 18th/19th, and at the Grandtully Div 1/2 August 25th/26th.

What the course consists of:
Level 1:
c. 12-14 hours of classroom work during the week (I will send you a detailed breakdown when you enrol) arranged in c. 4 sessions Mon-Thurs
c. 2-3 hours bankside/on the water (your choice: I will use guinea-pigs anyway): practicals of stroke and sequence coaching
1 session shadowing an established Coach (I hope you will all do that before you get there: see below)
1 day shadowing an established Coach coaching 3/4 paddlers on race-day, from forerunners/practice through to debrief after 2nd run
Have at least a 4-hour First-Aid certificate (8-hour recommended)
You will also need to be a BCU member (Full for Level 2; Basic for Level 1)

Level 2: you will be able at least to start the assessment
process (ie trial exam paper etc) as long as you
warn me in advance

What you need to do now: Send me your contact details (including e-mail address - very important) + cheque for £60.00 (made out to me)
Get your First Aid done
Get your shadowing done if at
all possible
Join the BCU if not yet a member
If intending to go on to L2: try
to get to 2 sportscoach
workshops - look on scUK
website for ones in your locality
GET SOME COACHING DONE:
whatever I or anyone else
teaches you, you only learn to
Coach by Coaching
Get your Club to CRB check you

Prioritisation:
• I do not make any money out of these courses; I
run them for the benefit, primarily, of Clubs in
Yorkshire.
• Specifically I run them so that Clubs do not have
any excuse for not running proper coaching
systems: the same groups of young paddlers
coached by the same coach on a weekly basis, and
coached at races.
• Therefore I reserve the right, if demand is too high,
to prioritise those who are sponsored by their Clubs
on the basis that they will coach for and within their
clubs
