If you do not contact me by Sunday 21st June about any mistakes concerning your entry then I will not enter you to the race. I will put another post when the Start List has been published on the website.

I will also post a list of people with RTC's which hopefully I can manage to sort out before the event to save time on the weekend. I will be at The Chapel Falls Division 1 and Pinkston Division 1 if you would like to see me regarding your entry or lack of, or you can email me at samuel.hotchin@gmail.com. If you have emailed me and I have not replied It is because of en error with the spam filter on my emails. I am slowly going through them all and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

If you would like a Judges run then please contact me to that I can enter you. Also any one who is willing to do a stint of judging or Safety please make yourself known to me so that a rota can be prepared.
Saftey is always needed whether you are a parent on the side with a thrown line or a paddler in a boat.

Anyone wanting an officials run can enter on the day although it would be better if you can let me know in advance. I have missed some officials from the above list, if you have contacted me about an officials run you are entered I've just missed you from the above list.

Just a little note about Newly Promoted Paddlers, You are only counted as newly promoted if you are promoted after 2 weeks before am event. So for the Washburn Division 1 that will mean any paddler promoted at Cardington Division 2/3 on the 13th/14th June or any paddle that is promoted by a "paddle Up" at the Division 1 Pinkston Event on the 20th/21st June. It would also include anyone promoted on the 27th June at the Fairnilee Division 2/3 Race who then drives all the way down to Washburn to race on the Sunday.

I will only enter you as a newly promoted paddler if you are promoted at one of these events, otherwise you do not fit the criteria to count as a newly promoted paddler.

BUT the rules say that you cannot accept late entries after the race is full. The way I read that this takes precedence over any other clauses.

The bit about newly promoted paddlers is intended to prevent them paying late entry fees for an event that they did not know they could enter until after the closing date. It does not give a right to an entry.

This also seems equitable. Consider if an event is full two months before the race. Why should someone promoted in teh final two weeks get precedence for entry over those promoted 3 weeks, a month or two months before the event?
All spelling errors are intentional and are there to show new and improved ways of spelling old words. Grammatical errors are due to too many English classes/teachers.

Your interpretation is what I agree on, however I have always been informed that you had to accept entries from newly promoted paddlers if promoted 2 weeks before your event. I was further told I had to enter them even if the event was already full. Which from an organisers point of view makes life very difficult.

Now if It isn't a requirement to accept entries from newly promoted paddlers as I was informed then I wont enter any newly promoted paddlers into the even which is already full.

Hi Sam

Here's an idea. Let promotees and paddle ups race in but make them do some judging in return. Therefore you get as many judges as you need, booked in advance and instead of 25 free judges runs, you get 25 additional paying runs which means more revenue, more happy paddlers getting a chance to get some points and a better event. There are only around 10 promoted paddlers anyway. Otherwise you get promoted and your season is finished.

If they are not prepared to judge, then turn them away.

Hi Sam. Actually there are 16 Short Season paddlers in all individual categories excluding C2. Could work.

The problem I have isn't the limit of paddlers, I would quite happy ignore that number to accept more paddlers. But the problem is the water time that we have. Believe me if I had enough water time I would accept every entry that I have received but water time is a serious limitation on the amount of entries that I can accept and I just cannot possibly accept over a certain amount.

Hi Sam

it's a toughie.

I think I would allocate the water time that was for judges runs to div 1 promotees then paddle ups and then judges runs in that order. Get the newbies and pups judging for you. You kill 3 birds with 1 stone and you make an extra £700.00 in entry fees for the same water time as you have now.

20 judges entries would be a waste of water time, points opportunities and money.

Er....not a waste of time for those who want to judge, get a run and see how they do but not compete in the main class or get points?

I agree! I can't paddle up etc without applying for re-ranking which I don't plan to do!

I appreciate that you want to paddle, but the event is so over subscribed and all of the div 1's are over subscribed that water time is at a premium.Whilst it would be nice to let everyone paddle, it is better to prioritise those that have applied for ranking, have got a bib and need the water time for competitive purposes rather than what is effectively recreational purposes.

Er..no? If there are too many div 1s and you need more div 1 races and more people involved in volunteering in slalom, interested in competition and helping out at all these races it could be better to value volunteers and encourage a culture of volunteering in competitive slalom by providing the opportunity for those are happy or indeed keen to help and judge but who would like a run down the course (for 'essentially recreational' purposes - bit short sighted - maybe in preparation in some way for competing in the future?)

Unless you want to completely rely on the competitive paddlers to do the judging at every race and that becomes the system - so minimal 'volunteers'.

Going beyond this race to the more general discussion on another thread here, but when the post came up that at the Pinkston Div 1 everyone 'except officials' could pay £3 to access some water slots beforehand, then the decision not to go as an official was made - as one of the reasons to enter as an official was to help but also to be able to get to know the water at that venue in preparation for re-ranking.

Sorry Sam, your situation with the water must be pretty stressful, but sure you will get it worked out.

You have to remember that those doing "judges runs" are officials in all capacities i.e organisers, section judges, timing team as well as the more often thought of judges. Many of these people start helping at the event long before the competitors arrive (sometime even days beforehand) and finish helping long after the competitors are having dinner/ in the pub/ in bed. These people do not have time to walk the course, prepare to compete, warm up etc thus a competitive run is unlikely to happen. These people often struggle to find time to get changed and do their runs before going back to their duties.

I think you have a narrow view as to who actually uses these runs and why they do them, which may be because we are in the minorty but the minority still exists.
