Tully Prem March 17,18 and Pan Celtic

Post by RobM » Tue Mar 06, 2018 8:46 pm

Dear Entrants,

Please be aware that Pitcastle Estate has an operating Hydro Scheme on the North bank of the Grandtully Slalom Course. If the hydro scheme gets blocked or has to stop suddenly for some reason, and the water coming down the 2m diameter pipe cannot go through the Archimedes screw, this water will overflow the concrete spill and flow down the river bank into the River Tay. If this does occur, within 3 seconds, 7000 litres per second will cascade over the concrete spill and over the river bank below. It is quite dramatic when it happens and you would not want to be below it.

Therefore, for the two days of racing, Pitcastle Estate has made it clear that NOBODY should cross the concrete overspill or the river bank below the concrete overspill. If anybody is found to be within that area, then the estate reserves the right to cancel its lease agreement with the SCA with immediate effect and the Tully Prem Race would have to stop.

Therefore the following arrangements have been made for race days.

1. Spectators are not allowed on the North Bank.
2. Judges and officials are allowed on the North Bank to Judge races. However, they ARE NOT ALLOWED to cross or sit on the land immediately below the concrete spill. This area of ground will be marked to prevent access. A judge will be allowed to sit on the spit of land just downstream of the concrete spill but access to that point is through the small bridge and marked path within the hydro scheme itself.
3. Competitors are allowed on the north bank to view demo runs. However, they ARE NOT ALLOWED to cross or view the demo runs from the land immediately below the concrete spill. Viewing of demo runs may need to be split. The top half of the race may need to be viewed from the north bank from above the hydro scheme, while the bottom section may have to be viewed from the southern bank of the river Tay.. The demo runners may have to wait while the competitors move from the north bank across the road bridge to the south bank. This may seem to be an inconvenience, but it may be the only way that the full demos may be viewed.
4. Competitors will be allowed to view the course from the north bank during the race day, but again they ARE NOT ALLOWED to cross the concrete spill or the land immediately below the concrete spill.
It cannot be overemphasised, that Pitcastle Estate will terminate its lease with the SCA with immediate effect if these arrangements are not adhered too and the race will have to stop. Last year, it was only be goodwill and good grace that the race was allowed to continue after competitors and officials ignored the signs and stood on the ground immediately below the concrete spill.

If competitors and/or officials choose to ignore this email and the signs that will be displayed on site, then they will forfeit their place in the race.

In the week preceding the race, the same restrictions apply. Breadalbane Canoe Club cannot police the river bank during this time, but Pitcastle Estate will not hesitate to withdraw the lease arrangement and the Tully Race will not go ahead.

I am sure that you will all understand this and look forward to making sure that the Grandtully Prem goes head with success.

I really hope everyone follows these instructions, we have already lost one venue in the last few years because paddlers could not follow some simple instructions regarding where to put boats and park cars.

Do not assume that if there is no-one around to see, that you can get away with this - the area can be clearly seen on the webcam and the estate do check it.

HUGE thank you to gate judges, timing people and everyone who helped run the event in challenging and Arctic conditions. I'm always amazed that so many people are willing to volunteer their time and effort to give me the chance to have fun for a weekend. Never take it for granted, especially in tough conditions like last weekend.
well done all!
