Symonds Yat

Post by kenlaw50n » Sun Mar 11, 2018 10:21 pm

What gauge is best to use for levels at Symonds Yat.

Have paddled there before so I can look back at dates to get an idea but not sure if best to use lydbrook or Ross on wye gauge.

Any help much appreciate

Lydbrook is closer, about 5 miles upstream.
I was speaking to the Wyedean folks this weekend, they say the river is up :)

Symonds Yat is totaly washed out today but we could just about get a course on it.
WE WILL NEED SAFETY BOATS.

RIVER LEVELS.
I use river levels.uk

Ross On Wye is some 6 hours of water upstream and still on the up. A good level is 1meter, but 2 meters is challenging.

I always look at Bredwardine first. The River now is just levelling out, and is the best indication as to what we will get tomorrow.

Then look at Builth Wells. The River is now Dropping and that is what Symonds Yat will get in about 36 hours.

So the prediction is the River will drop providing we don't get lots of heavy Rain in Mid Wales.

Will need to make a decision on Wed as to go ahead or possibly put the event back a week.
We can run the event at any level but its going to be a challenge.

Any offers of Safety Boats welcome, as long as you don't require rescuing.

Hi Everyone
The River today was to high to start putting a course up.
Its dropping fast, but there is rain forecast.

I am going to be there all day tomorrow and Friday and will get some sort of a course up.

Its going to be demanding and could possibly get de-ranked. But we will definitely run something.
Safety is the biggest concern and we can only Run a event on a high river with sufficient safety boats.

Natural rivers can be testing, especially one that gets 4meters or variation.

Will post an update tomorrow evening.

Hi Mike,

Happy to bring down my plastic boat and help out with safety, just as long as I get time to get my own runs in!

Symonds Yat Div 2/3 IS ON THIS WEEKEND!

Post by RobK » Thu Mar 15, 2018 5:30 pm

Hi All

Mitch is still on the river tweaking the course but we can now confirm the event is going ahead as planned. The river is going to be high but we are confident that we can set a course that is appropriate for this ranking. We will provide safety boats during official practice and throughout the racing. Competitors need to observe the notices about staying on the water to cover the next paddler coming down. We anticipate that the river will steadily drop during the course of the weekend.

The Beast from the East is making a return so it's going to be cold with a risk of snow!! So bring your thermals.

We are providing cooked breakfast in the local village hall and an hot evening meal and somewhere to have a warm on Saturday night - see full event info for details.

Any help appreciated with running the event - just pop into Race Control.
Looking forward to seeing you all on the weekend. :D
