HPP Prem/Div 1 - Sept 21/22

Post by CeeBee » Fri Aug 23, 2019 9:31 pm

Hi
I've just been looking at the entries for this race and noticed that the entry limit is 190 for Saturday and 160 for Sunday. The Sunday waiting list has 44 paddlers looking for a ranking or Junior champs race on it.

Is there a time constraint for the Sunday that is causing this limit?

This is the Junior 12 champs and there have been a fair few promoted during the season who are on the waiting list who would like to contest this but won't get any entry. (It's also the J14 and J16 champs but the winners will be Prem/Div 1 paddlers for these age groups).

I believe that the lower limit is in part at least because time has to be allowed for Div 1s to have their practice runs - Prems do not get official practice. It is also likely that a little longer needs to be allowed, on average for Div 1s.

The impact of champs on the ranking competition was discussed at the last committee meeting. From the minutes:
All remaining division 1 and Premier races have places available except the Sunday of the September HPP
Division 1 which is over-subscribed for host paddlers, probably due to the Junior 16 / Veterans
Championships also being run that day.

There was some discussion over treating entries for Championship / Pan Celtic races in the same way as
paddle ups, but this was felt to degrade the Championships / Pan Celtic too much.

Just a thought which may not be possible at this stage.

Given that the J16 championship for K1 Men and Women will be won by a prem paddler, could we move the K1 men (and possible the K1W) categories to be contested on the Saturday instead? This would free up 16 spaces for the Sunday.

Those who have entered the Div1 as a Div2 paddle up are now as Champs. Will they still be able to get paddle up points?

I like this idea but it is probably to late.

I also looked at cancelling my entry this morning to let a J14 promoted this year in. But next on the list is a Vet and my rival

Great weekend of racing at HPP.

However, there were 16 paddlers listed on the results who did not race. Surely these paddlers could have withdrawn in advance of the race to allow those on the waiting list to get entries.

There will always be a couple of paddlers who find they can't race just before the weekend but when an event is oversubscribed it would be great if paddlers unable to paddle let the organiser know so that the place can be offered to someone else. We had several paddlers keen to race who didn't get entries as they were quite far down the waiting list as they were promoted to Div 1 this season.

I agree.....and there are nearly always local paddlers who can step in at a moments notice.

It may not have made any difference to whether others got places.

The organisers had already accepted 15 paddlers over and above the entry limit to squeeze in as many host paddlers as possible, so they may have been relying on a few no-shows to get everyone down the course
