Better than the entire German Team

Post by Canadian Paddler » Tue Sep 17, 2013 9:42 am

Ok so if no one else will start it I will.

Congratulations to the British team at the worlds :P
Two C1w in the finals, Alice was 11th, missing the final by 0.76 secs) then 7th for Kimberly and a wonderful Silver for Mallory

Fantastic performance from Joe Coombs in his first world's final and so close to the podium

C1M FIRST WORLD C1 Champion for GBR, David Florence take a bow. With Tom Quinn 15th just one touch from the final and Mark Proctor 24th

Rich Hounslow was in fantastic and David 'Awesome' Florence were in top form in the C2. No athlete has ever won two individual classes at the same World Champs and GB have never won a gold medal at the Worlds in C1m or C2m before, definitely a momentous weekend!!

As one German coach was alleged to have said
David did better on his own than the entire German Team"

K1 Women were there, with Lizzie 11th, with just penalties stopping all three from being in the finals.

The new senior team manager looked quiet pleased as well!

However who is to question the BBC after they corrected previous reports:

The brace of gold medals means Florence has become the first British man to win the C1 and C2 double in the same year.

The feat has been achieved only once before, by Swiss paddler Charles Dussuet in 1953.
First in 60 years so still more achievable than a British Man winning at Wimbledon 8)

OK, I sit corrected. 1953 Merrano, 13 nations competed, 135 athletes.
AUT Austria 15
BEL Belgium 5
DEN Denmark 1
ESP Spain 2
FRA France 20
FRG Federal Republic of Germany 26
GBR Great Britain 7
GDR German Democratic Republic 10
ITA Italy 4
LUX Luxembourg 4
SUI Switzerland 15
TCH Czechoslovakia 19
YUG Yugoslavia 7

Charles Dussnet managed Gold in C1 (384.4) and C2 (354.6), Silver in C1 Team (1,670) and C2 team (1,466.4). Now that is what I call a set of run times!!

Britains best was 8th in the folding K1M teams.

Dussnet was building on his 1951 C1 Gold and C2 team bronze (Steyr Austria), but finished out of the medals in 1955 when he still made the finals in C2 / C2 Team

Thanks to Miroslav Haviar for his results database.

And don't forget our C2 team bronze as well, another medal in Prague 2013.

Also, I am sure it wasn't a deliberate mistake in the original post, but it was Joe Clarke, not Coombes who made the final.

:D
