Re: Boat weights in the past

For info: I have edited the Wikipedia page to say 30 pounds, not 30 kilos.

Re: C1 Promotion points

The number of paddlers going up needs to be reflected in the numbers going down otherwise Div 1 in particular could be very oversubscribed. No, it's more complicated than that, Dee. The number of paddlers promoted during the course of the year plus any end-of-year promotions needs to be balanced ag...

Re: C1 Promotion points

Looking back at the original post, it was about paddlers who've had some really good results but aren't quite there for promotion. Thank you WindsorCC, it was. And since it was posted the numbers promoted in C1 have sorted themselves out nicely. The shortfall due to lost races is in K1M, and it doe...

Tryweryn Pan Celtic and Prem 29/30 September

Published on behalf of Mark Abbott: We are still waiting for confirmation regarding a water release for the Premier races at the Tryweryn. The dam feeding the river is very low and the Environment Agency is closely monitoring the situation. Can I ask that anyone who is entered for the races please c...

Re: Timing

I've seen start sat about a metre up from a start line.
The solution to this is putting the judge in the right position, not adjusting the timing standards!

Re: Demotions

I don't think there is anything in the Year book about demotions though, is there? No, and never has been. It's a committee discretion thing, so that it can adapt to circumstances. But I would be very reluctant to demote a paddler with more points than a paddler who was not demoted having done less...

Re: Points at mixed division events

I agree with Dee.
A lot of Div 3 races are combined with Div 2s. The effect of this change is hard to predict, but it's quite likely to make it harder to get promotion from Div 3 and block progression.

Re: proposed minimum points

Under this rule
  • A Prem (or a paddle up at a Prem) who just drifted from start to finish without doing any of the gates would get as many points as a paddler who made the top ten percent at a Div 1
  • Five paddle-ups would guarantee promotion
Sorry, it's not a good idea.

Re: Timing

We used to time Div 2 to Div to whole seconds as standard. The change to 0.1 second came in 2009, and the rule is now a little strange (the jury has discretion, but no alternative). Up to 2008: 33.4.2 Division 2 to 4 events using any other start and/or finish* for the whole event shall be timed to 1...

Re: Paddlers that have problems making their minds up!

I can't see any reason why refunds shouldn't wait until after the event.

Re: C1 Promotion points

At this time last year I was very concerned about the lack of promotions in C1M and C1W: by the end of the year things had sorted themselves out, and the proportion of C1s promoted was higher than K1s. What happens in classes with fewer paddlers is that, because a win is relatively easier (sorry win...

Boat weights in the past

According to Wikipedia, Folding kayaks were used from 1949 to 1963; and in the early 1960s, boats were made of fiberglass and nylon. Boats were heavy, usually over 65 pounds (30 kilos). That's seriously heavy, and I would have thought even a canvas boat could be a lot lighter - I'd have guessed 30 p...

ICF Drops C2 from World Events

The ICF has dropped C2 from World Championship and World Cup races, with immediate effect, "to provide extra focus on C2 mixed slalom". The announcement hides a hammer-blow for C2 athletes behind a lot of virtuous waffle about gender equality. The logic might be sound if any of last year's mixed C2 ...

Re: 6.3 Veterans Ranking

Dee says: 35 does seem very young.
I think I agree. And it would put a different aspect on the freedom to enter races issue if Vets started at (say) 45.
