Re: Junior prizes

Many years ago when I was first involved in slalom, there were lots of older paddlers and very few young juniors. The events were often won by paddlers aged18+ and so it was good to have junior prizes. These were predominately for J18s, J16s and J14s but usually those in J18 won J18 as they were bet...

Re: 6.10 Entry Fees

There's a challenge! Given that timing and judging fees have doubled for double Div 1 and double Prems as they are now charged per day (which I don't think was voted on at any ACM) than per weekend, the Div 1 and Prem entry fees should be increased to allow for this increase in expenses so that it i...

Re: Can we find 500 new paddlers for 2022?

There’s not much we as club coaches, or even the slalom committee, can do about the talent pathway. I do think that the dissolving of the RTA and tougher entry requirements for (the group previously known as) the SRS things may ease on this front. The Slalom School scheme, for all its training camp...

Re: BC Membership For Div 4 Races

That is very good news. Looks like SCA use the same insurance as BC so will apply in Scotland too. The wording is quite clear. Entry-level competition and participation events Club Associate members are covered by insurance for entry-level competitions organised for, or on behalf of, British Canoein...

Re: BC Membership For Div 4 Races

Hard to conclude that it is anything other than a money making ruse hidden under unnecessary insurance.

Re: BC Membership For Div 4 Races

I too have raised this for many years and had a long chat with the BC Slalom committee on the topic. For those of us working with the grassroots, I find it really hard to introduce people to the sport when you have to pay the entry fee and then day membership fee. Surely paddlers can do a couple of ...

Re: BC Membership For Div 4 Races

Hopefully it does apply as charging membership for introductory events is a barrier to entry. The sport badly needs new blood after covid and we need to take proactive steps across the sport to encourage paddlers to take up slalom. It is a great sport to be involved in. We always used to allow this ...

Re: GRANDTULLY DIV 1 28/29 AUGUST 2021

Its certainly possible and would be great to make it happen. Online entries takes away a lot of the admin so that's a good start. The judging could be made easier by splitting the paddlers up into say 12 groups (with 1 or more clubs in same group) with each group being responsible for judging a sect...

Re: GRANDTULLY DIV 1 28/29 AUGUST 2021

Just wondered if you are already part of a club that runs a slalom or part of a club that wants to run this slalom.

We all want and need more slaloms to run for the future of the sport but I do wonder how many of those in Div 1 and prem are involved in running an event at this level?

Duncan, you should try contacting David Dickson. He runs CanoeTec but his main business is Protoshape and he can mould anything in plastic to fit your requirements.

Re: Back to Slaloms

yes the event will be held at Pinkston as it is one of the few sites in Scotland that can control public access. It has guaranteed water and is relatively affordable for a pumped course. It is being run with paddlers being allocated to a group and this group will have an allocated time slot of so th...

Re: Isn't it strange?

Hi Dee Obviously no one knows when canoeing can resume and when races can resume. It may be that there are no races run at all in 2020 in which case we just wait until 2021 to restart. (I haven't considered what will happen if this runs into 2021 as can't think that far ahead yet). Whenever we resum...

Re: British Canoeing - Club Consultation Survey (Not the same as Stronger Together 2021-2025 survey)

Is this really an insurance issue? What exactly does an individual paddler competing need insurance for? How could anyone possibly claim against an individual paddler and what evidence would be needed? There are lots of people at an event who are not insured e.g. volunteer judges and some paddling n...

Re: British Canoeing - Club Consultation Survey (Not the same as Stronger Together 2021-2025 survey)

I strongly believe that any changes should include automatic cover for all competitors at entry level events, ie div 4 and 3/4. Our rules would then require paddlers applying for a bib to have full membership as they do currently, but would not need to worry about who was and wasn’t a member. (If n...

Re: Non quorat classes and paddle ups

I don't think K1W and C1W should as a general rule be compared to mens classes. If you did a statistical analysis of the results over the last 5 years, you would find that the variance in women classes v mens classes depends on the length and difficulty of the course. I think the current arrangement...
