BCU Yearbooks 1974 to 1980

Post by Spiderman » Thu Nov 22, 2012 10:31 am

In the days before online data and statistics we used to depend upon good old fashioned paper Yearbooks to inform us how our season had gone. My wonderful Mummy was meticulous in her record keeping of my slalom activities and this has made easy the scanning and uploading of these yearbooks. These are not scans of the entire Yearbooks, just the ranking lists at the top of each class.

I thought it would be a good idea to have these online for reference purposes so that (1) the young athletes of today can see a little history about their sport (although they will probably not be terribly interested in this until they have their own history in the sport!) and (2) we older paddlers can reflect on a large portion of our formative years. Hopefully it will stir a few memories and raise a few smiles - possibly not as much as if I had scanned in the boat adverts with £60 boat prices but it depends on how much interest these generate before I think about scanning those in!

Apologies for the highlighting of some of my entries but you know how parents are! Hopefully i will become the same :-)

The comments I have made regarding each Yearbook focus more on Viking Kayak Club paddlers and those I raced with rather than the remainder. However, if anyone has any comments they wish to add, please get them to me and I will add them in with credits!

ENJOY!

Spotted Johny Watson (1980 - K1M Prem number 30). Part of the Nottingham uni crowd - he now runs an excellent outdoor activity centre in the South West and his son is a top notch surfing kayaker

The period when I was in the forces and didn't paddle domestically.

Love the demotion to Novice, and Div's A&B for canadians.

Lots of names there of people who are still competing today.

Good observation! I didn't spot the demotion to Novice Terry. That must be a huge division by now! :-)

Great job Pete,

brought back a lot of memories. As you said does not mean much to people until they have their own history to think about. Would be good for others to add more year books and memories of those involved and bring right up to date before it is forgotten.

For the sport to progress we need to know where we have been!

Jim.

If you log onto Chalfont Park Canoe Club, they have a link to nearly all the Old Year Books, Mags, and Result Sheets.
Peter Keene and John Macleod have been working on the Archives.
I found one of my first Div 3 Slaloms at Matlock, 345 entries, just in the Div3.

Anyone with any Old result sheets Peter Keen would love a copy.

I have every (I think) year book from 1970 to the present. If anyone wants something specific from that set, let me know. I'm not planning to scan every one of those though - the lockdown could not possibly last that long.
