Fairnilee div 2/3/4 22/23 June

Post by JimW » Sun Jun 16, 2019 11:06 pm

A few things to note relating to the competition this weekend:

- There is no internet at Fairnilee and we will be there from Thursday to set up, therefore we have to close online and postal entries on Tuesday. Please don't panic though, we have plenty of space for on the day entries in all divisions so won't turn anyone away. Control will be manned in some form Friday evening, the sooner you get entries in to us the better.

- This evening I have been looking at timings and revised the schedule on online entries, please check the latest start list for up to date timings. Obviously with on the day entries the online list will quickly go out of date; the best information will be posted on the sawmill windows throughout the weekend

- Mobile phone, 3G & 4G are non-existant on some networks or intermittant on others unless you walk some distance up the minor road to higher ground. Therefore do not expect to connect to the start list on online entries during the weekend - we have no way to update it anyway, look on the sawmill windows.

- If we have time to set up a remote results display we may also find time to set up a local wifi network (i.e. one without internet access) so you can view the results on your phone around the sawmill area. Last time we tried it just about reached the top end of the camping field. The only site you will be able to see on the wifi will be Fairnilee results.

- Although the site has been used quite safely for many years, it is necessary to walk along a road without footpath between the campsite/start area, the sawmill/control and the finish so children should be supervised at all times.

- The sheep have been out of the camping field for a few days already so there shouldn't be much evidence of them by the weekend, they or other livestock will be back in the field after us so it is essential to clean up all your rubbish and make sure you get all your tent pegs. We do not have rubbish disposal facilities so you will need to take all your own rubbish home (or find somewhere legal to dispose of it on the way).

- The farmyard is a hazardous working environment and not a place for children to play (there is plenty of space in the field).

- Please be sensible, think about what you are doing and the possible effects for others. Messing about with portable toilets or other peoples tents isn't funny and could land you in a lot of trouble. If you need more entertainment, get an adult to supervise you and go paddling, or do rolling practice or something.

- Volunteers: we don't have enough confirmed volunteers for all jobs yet so any offers to help with judging, control or safety will be gratefully accepted.

Thank you for reading, we look forward to welcoming you at Fairnilee over the weekend.

Big thank you to everyone who helped out over or before the weekend, especially Jim McPherson from Leithen Water Paddlers, who set up Tutti and the PA whilst my unfortunately reduced team (unavoidable work commitments) struggled to erect the course before paddlers arrived to practise it, and Jock young without whom the rest of the course erection team would probably have only got to about gate 10...

Apologies for underestimating the toilet requirements, they have been sufficient for other events but I have a feeling we may have had an exceptionally high entry plus a few extra campers on DoE expeditions. I'm sure it was a great relief to some when they were emptied on Sunday morning!

Congratulations to all the winners and all the promotees, even the ringers in div 3 C1W who were faster than all the div 2 C1W... both now promoted I believe.

West Lothian CC were happy for us to give out the Scott Cockburn trophy for best man over the weekend, unfortunately the April Hardman trophy for best lady over the weekend has gone missing (if anyone realises they have it please get in touch).
This became a shoot out between Hexham CC and Pinkston Panthers, and the Hexham paddlers (Ryan and Chloe) who tripled up in K1, C1 and C2 (together) managed amazing results over the weekend, but we had decided to add Saturday and Sunday places together in each of K1 and C1 separately and award the trophy to the lowest score which means that Adam Knox from Pinkston Panthers got the Scott Cockburn trophy for double wins in div 3 K1M, and if the April Hardman trophy is found it would go to Leah Cameron from Pinkston Panthers for double wins in div 3 C1W.
If we had used different criteria, these may well have gone to Ryan and Chloe respectively so they certainly deserve a mention!

Thank you everyone!

Thank you to you and your merry men and women for running another Scottish Slalom. Fairnilee is a great site thanks to Jim McPherson but the course does take rather a long time to put up especially compared to Pinkston. Always great to see paddlers pulling together to get a race ready.

You will have gone back to work for a rest!
