Washburn Div 2 - event info

Post by djberriman » Tue May 18, 2021 9:57 am

Subject to covid restrictions being eased on the 21st June, not getting delayed and a water release being available we intend to run the Div 2 slalom on Saturday June 26th only. 'Super' Saturday will see a Double Div 2 event on one day.

Entries open on the 14th of June.

This will be the first UK wide event of 2021 and we have to take COVID precautions.

Having taken advice on what it is likely we can and cannot do after the 21st June and that we must approach this cautiously, the following restrictions are expected.

No camping at the car park or the wood yard.
Only officials with totally self-contained vehicles will be allowed to stop on the car park.
Entrants must enter in advance and attend on their own wherever possible (a driver is permitted for children/if the entrant cannot drive).
Entries will be limited with priority given to divisional paddlers and there will be no judges runs or open event.
Numbers will be limited to that which can safely be accommodated in the car park.

Sadly there are many things that will not be normal.

There will be no spectating, non competitors are not exempt from any then current rules about congregating.
There will be no unofficial practice
The food tent will not be operating
We will not be able to display cards/results and must discourage any protests, we will attempt to make details available on a local wifi network
We will not be issuing prizes, certificates will be sent via post instead
There will be a one way system in place on the riverside
All attending (including children) should practice social distancing and wearing masks is encouraged when not near their car or on a run

No one should attend whose local restrictions prevent them from attending, if they have symptoms or should be in isolation or quarantine.

Please help us make sure the event goes smoothly without problem and we can get the 2021 race season going.

Anyone willing to volunteer to help run the event please email washburn@berrimans.co.uk

Following a question for a parent some clarification.

Parent will be able to follow paddler down the course.

Each car will have social distancing space so you can stay on site during the day.

Unfortunately, today’s government announcement that the current covid restrictions will remain in place until 19th July means that we are cancelling the Washburn Div 2 on 26/27 June, and also means that we won’t be able to run the Div 1 event

We were planning on the basis that the event would go ahead if Step 4 of the roadmap happened as planned. We have discussed the additional measures that would be needed to run this event under the current restrictions but do not believe it is viable to run an event with the additional measures / restriction required.

We know this will be disappointing for everyone that was looking forward to getting racing going again. We’ve put a lot of work in to plan and prepare to run a covid secure event, so we are equally disappointed and frustrated. But we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who had already volunteer to help at the event.

It is worth pointing out that with Yorkshire Water doing safety work on the lower dam, I was expecting to hear that there would be no water release for the Div 2 event and it was not looking promising for the Div 1 weekend water releases.

Fingers crossed that we can run our September Washburn event, and that other races can get going soon.
