Tully Div 1 - Teams?

Post by JimW » Sat Aug 20, 2022 1:42 pm

There has been much lamentation about reduction in numbers racing in Div 1 (and other divisions) this year, and Tully next weekend looks set to follow the pattern with just over 100 entries to squeeze into the time we usually cope with 200 entries.

This means we have options and flexibility in timings, and to put it frankly, unless we take a super long lunch break, we will be finished by the middle of the afternoon on Saturday.

It has also been identified that we need to think of ways to keep things fun and interesting to encourage paddlers to stick with it, one of the options which is apparently popular is team racing.

Would there be interest from those of you paddling next weekend, in having a team race on Saturday afternoon shortly after 2nd runs are finished?

Please let us know in advance, it takes a bit of setting up for div 1 so if there is no interest, we won't go to the extra trouble. Either reply below or email me jim@jim-wallis.co.uk
You don't need to pick your team before saying you are interested - if people are struggling to form teams we can always make up scratch teams for you.

If you have made it to div 1 without doing a team race yet and don't know what it is all about, basically you race as a team of 3 boats following each other down the course. The time starts when the first boat crosses the start line, and ends when the last boat crossed the finish line noting that the last paddler must finish within 15 seconds of the first paddler. So you have to work together to make sure you all arrive at the finish close together. The best thing to do is go onto youtube and search for past worlds and world cup races (they will be on planetcanoe channel), the first day is always a team race, and they are great to watch when done well.

Thanks for all the feedback (by email and FB, not being sarcastic) - the team race is a go!
