Scam

Post by djberriman » Thu Feb 02, 2017 9:03 am

Please watch out for scam emails examples of which are on Nicks site. 2 people selling boats have been contacted recently.

They emails are usually very badly written, you won't recognise their name (check the bib lists) so it's unlikely they would be interested in a slalom boat, and they will be too busy at work to come and see it. They will want to send a courier to pick it up and pay by cheque/bankers draft.

Further to this, they won't even be interested in picking up the boat...

They'll pay in advance by cheque/bankers draft, then be unable to collect the boat and will apologise profusely and say that you can pay the cheque into the bank, and then send them a cheque back minus something for you by way of apology (so they've send a cheque for £500, you pay that into the bank, write them a cheque for £400, so you've ended up with £100 compensation for the inconvenience).

Problem is that the original cheque is fraudulent, so eventually it will be declined, which can be weeks, or months later, but they've ended up with a legitimate cheque for £400 and you're down £400 when the original funds are withdrawn by the bank.
